Learn a New Word This Week: Propitiation

propitiation: that which serves as an instrument for regaining the goodwill of a deity

"...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith." Romans 3:23-25

If you only learn one new word this week, let it be this one!

Here's the context: A holy and sinless God loves His sin-ravaged creation. Because sin is, at its core, rebellion against God, how is He to be in relationship with His creation and yet remain holy?

Enter Good Friday. God sends His Son to the cross and remains both holy and just. He didn't simply overlook the rebellion of his creation but paid the penalty himself. The death of Christ is a propitiation -- regaining the goodwill of the one and only true God toward humanity.

Thanks be to God for this big word!
